THE LAND
East Nusa Tenggara consists of hundreds of islands, 246 of which have names, while 320 are unnamed. This group of islands 118° 44' and 125° 01' east and longitudes 8° 03' and 11° 08' south.
Permanently inhabited island are: Flores, Lembata, Adonara, Solor, Palue, Ende, Nules, Komodo, Rinca, Sumba, Timor, Sabu, Raijua, Rote, Semau, Alor, and Pantar.
East Nusa Tenggara has a dry tropical south winds. The rainy season falls between the months November to April, and dry season between May and November.
The further one moves to the east, the drier the climate is. East Nusa Tenggara is blessed with a beautiful nature as well as a unique culture. During the Dutch colonial period, the area was part of a residency, whose capital was Kupang.
After Indonesia's independence, it was in the beginning a part of the Provinces of the Lesser Sunda Islands, and changed its name to the Province of Nusa Tenggara not long after that, with the capital in Singaraja, Bali. In 1958 the province of Nusa Tenggara was divided into three provinces; the Provinces of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, ad East Nusa Tenggara.
The area of East Nusa Tenggara occupies an area of 49,879.98 square kilometers, and has a population of more than 3,500.000. It is divided into 12 regencies and one municipality.
The people living in this area speak various regional languages. Houses are designed with high conical roofs. East Nusa Tenggara's ikat textiles are world famous. Its traditions and artistic expression are unique.
Geologically, East Nusa Tenggara can be regarded as being divided into two zones: first, the volcanic inner curve formed by the islands Rinca, Komodo, Flores, Alor, Pantar, Adonara, Lembata and Solor, which have fertile soils and second, the out curve with limestone and rock formation, made up of the island Sumba, Sabu, Rote, Semau, and Timor.
Roughly 57 percent of the territory is hilly, with cliffs. The lowlands lay generally around the beaches and river mouths.
The tourist attraction of East Nusa Tenggara are its islands, seas, bays, beaches and mountains, traditions, art and legends.
