Journal entry: Oct 28, 1975 Tuesday—"Spectacular sunrise at 5:30 am (viewed from our beds on the open bridge of the ship). The island of Komodo is visible in the distance as we pass 1 kilometer off-shore. Past Komodo now, islands seem much more arid and barren. Have now passed through a gap between Sumbawa and Komodo Islands and over the starboard-side of the ship a 6,000-foot volcano (Mount Sangeang) towers out of the sea; much greener with foliage and appearing uninhabited along the shoreline. Makasar-style sailing boats are cruising off-shore (probably fishing). Dolphins have entertained us with periodic escorts along the way."
