The temple of Agia Moni monastery, Panagia village, Paphos. The official name is Agios Nikolaos monastery, as the monastery id dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myrrha. It is also known as "Moni ton Iereon" ie Monastery of the monks, because a long time ago there where many monks at the monastery. Today there is unfortunately only one monk there, father Epiphanios, a Cypriot monk that came from Agio Oros (Mount Athos).
Tradition says that the monastery was founded by the Saint Nicholas himself while passing through Cyprus.
The monastery actually belongs to another monastery, the monastery of Kykkos , of which it is a metochi.
The monastery is found only 2-3 kms from the monastery of Chrysoroyiatissa, outside Panagia village. The monastery was for many decades wthout monks. The first attempts to reinstate it began at about 1990. Fathers Paisios and Isaias of Kykkos where the first to go there and did a lot of work to make the monastery operational. Later father Athanasios, today Bishop of Limassol, was a monk there. The fact that the monastery did not keep any inspiring elder so as to attract young monks and perhaps the remoteness of the place had as a result that the monatery would not show growth in population of monks. The nearby monastery of Chrysoroyiatissa also shows signs of desertion. Later on in the decade of 90's the monastery was transformed to a womens' monastery, but again without success. Following that, a number of Romanian monks were placed at the monastery but again without success.
Today only one monk, father Epiphanios lives at the monastery, under the orders of Bishop Nikiphoros of Kykkos monastery.
