We arrived in Marica, a small village without any shop or accommodation, which was not where I had planned to go. Between the neighbouring islands of Lembata and Pantar in the Lesser Sunda Islands chain there is only one regular boat connection per week. This irregular crossing depended on a boat from Pantar going to the weekly market in Wairiang (Lembata Island) and back. With the winds starting to get stronger at this time of the year only one boat made the trip to the market and back. Going into the waves for most of the way everybody got thoroughly soaked. I had to pay a motorcycle driver to take me onwards to Baranusa, Pantar Island's quaint capital (one restaurant and one guesthouse) to move further east along the island chain. Public transport did not exist because of poor road conditions.
