A Halloween post of one of the scary things that can lurk under your house. Komodo dragons on Komodo and Rinca Island (Varanus komodoensis) like to hang around under the rangers houses. This endangered species can weigh up to ~150 lbs and are carnivorous, taking down large deer (and occasionally attacking humans). They don't kill their prey outright, but wait until the victim dies from blood loss, caused by their venom-laden bites. They track the carrion with their odor-sensitive tongues.

[] Many thanks, Mya! We also went to Rinca Island. The Komodos there had a lot more ticks and the ones on Komodo Island seem healthier.
