Travel is a major love of my life. I have been fortunate enough to spend a number of years on the road and I have adored every minute of them. It changed my life at a time when it needed to change and before discovering photography it was the main obsession in my life (actually it still is). When I should have been working at the nine to five, I would instead be plotting routes through various parts of the world. It has nothing to do with being restless in life but the fact that we live on an amazing planet and I don’t want my view of other countries and cultures to be provided by the mainstream media.

Now that I can navigate my way around Lightroom a bit better than when I took these shots during a two month trip through Indonesia in 2012, I thought I would put together a short series of images from this amazing country. My style of photography has really changed over the last twelve months and so that is why this series will be no longer than about ten to twelve images (no one wants to sit through hundreds of photos of volcanoes and islands). It was also the first time I had used an SLR when travelling so you could call this my first photography efforts.

This first image was taken in Riung on the island of Flores. Flores is my favourite island of Indonesia and also the most challenging travel I have experienced in South East Asia (more of that later in the series). There were not many travellers in Riung at the time and the girls were very interested in chatting to my partner. When they requested that I take their photo you could tell straight away that if they were a band, the one in the middle was the lead singer.

Hope you are all having a great start to 2014.

Wonderful story and title mate, absolutely wonderful. Love this one very much, there is so much character, playful and honest, that is simply jumps of the screen. Fabulous stuff my friend. And I'm also excited because I've been thinking more and more about traveling to Indonesia sometime, soon hopefully, but not so soon realistically. Lookin' forward to it fella, and cracker of an image once more mate.

A wonderfully candid moment, truly capturing the characters of these young women. One could almost see them at adults. Lovely light and fabric detail. Great locale detail in background.

Travel is the one thing I miss about being single. The ability to up sticks and just go is a wonderful thing. The world is there to be discovered, to be documented so as to be understood and revealed.
Agree about the airports thing, been in a few that are sheds with advertising, but others which are architectural wonders - Hong Kong and Seoul - I really love.
Here's to adventure, Mark!
brendan ó sé 2014-01-07 05:54:33

john@aus 2014-01-07 05:54:45
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/instame] Will toast to that. Hong Kong is a pretty cool airport but got to be Singapore all the way for me. Oh, and any German airport. Love that country.
