While taking a walk along Kerandangan Beach at Senggigi, Lombok, Indonesia, we spotted this crab despite its superb camouflage.

Although it's a great crab photo, that "salt and pepper" sand is pretty interesting, too ! Nothing like the Jersey Shore (USA) beaches where I spent my summers as a kid.

[] It's a mixture of the regular beach sand with black sand grains of volcanic origin. These might came from Mount Rinjani, second highest volcano in Indonesia (still active). That volcano is a few kilometers North of where I was.

[] Thanks for the info, Niki. That's pretty cool that you had a still-active volcano nearby. Nothing volcanic here on Okinawa. We have one beach that sort of looks like that. The "regular sand" is mixed with little bits of black coral. However, the sand in your photo is way more "salt-and-peppery" looking.
