_.<r;.= i,~T ^.^^ The Palisades on the lludson. olis on one side, Jersey City upon theopposite shore, the fortresses of Gover-nors Island, of Bedloes, of Elliss Isl-ands, and of Fort Hamilton ; the shoresof old Long Island, and the villa banksof Staten Island beyond, with the far-off perspective of the hill-bound Nar-rows—before we must turn our backsupon it all, to gaze upon the yet morecharming scenes which are presentedto us as our steamer turns its prownorthward. Along we sail, past the streets andwharves of the city, which seem inter-minable in succession, but our eyes fallupon the wooded shores at last, upon theelegant country villas peeping out fromamong the trees on the one hand, andthe tall cliffs of the far-reaching Pali-sades on the other. The wilderness ofbrick and stone is behind us and for-gotten, in the presence of green fieldsand rustling woods.
