Prink Ladybird, Cheilomenes sexmaculata, walking a thin line on the stem of Coffee Senna, Senna occidentalis, at Lembar Bay - Labuan Tring reminded me of that Dutch H.M. Siboga Expedition 1899-1900 that I've mentioned before (see previous photo) and the line that it established versus the Wallace Line.
That naturalist expedition sought to understand how Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859 had come to posit the so-called Wallace Line through the Lombok-Bali Strait. That line separates the Euro-Asian from the Australian ecosystems (to put it succinctly if not entirely precisely). Wallace had come to Sekotong's Labuan Tring in 1859. He had found animal life here to have Australian forms he hadn't encountered westward. He postulated a very deep divisive Strait between Lombok and Bali.
Dr Max Carl Wilhelm Weber (1852-1937) had been sceptical about Wallace's claims from at least the late 1880s when he had been part of an earlier Dutch expedition here. Now in 1899 the great test was to come. The H.M. Siboga stayed several days at Wallace's Labuan Tring, and then proceeded to take soundings of the depth of the Lombok-Bali Strait. Anna Weber-van Bosse waxes eloquent on the enthusiasm of Siboga's naturalists. Wallace had assumed that the Strait was extremely deep, but now Weber and his crew were to make soundings. On March 22, they set out into the wild waters of the Strait. Anna writes breathlessly: 'Today the Siboga's soundings would decide who was right, Wallace or Weber, and the work was done with great enthusiasm. That enthusiasm was quite welcome for it was as if the Sea itself was disturbed that another of its secrets was about to be revealed. The waves were high and the current strong... but the soundings proved that the Strait dividing Bali from Lombok was not deep at all, a mere 312 metres...' Weber postulated a new line - obviously: the Weber Line - further eastward between Timor and the Tanimbar Islands. Scientists never rest, of course, and soon a new line was posited by yet another naturalist.
Regardless, Anna's account is highly fascinating reading!

Gorgeous hot - and interesting story. It must have been so amazing in the late 1800's - discovering the world afar and it's wonders.

That takes the prize for the prettiest, jazziest ladybug I've ever seen! I have enjoyed my stroll, this afternoon, through your Indonesian pics. Sorry to overload you with comments. Have limited time and like saving up these forays into another world to enjoy all at once.
